SECOND INTERNATIONAL AWARD FOR ARCHITECTURE ACXT-IDOM

JUDGING PANEL REPORT

FIRST:

The Judging Panel for the Second International Award for Architecture run by ACXT and IDOM, met on 31 March 2009, at 10:00a.m at the offices of the Fundación Rafael Escolá, situated at No. 46 Claudio Coello street, 1st floor – Right.

Members of the Judging Panel present at the deliberations were:

SECOND

The secretary gave information on the full list of participants:

A total of 462 proposals representing 33 different countries, with 60% of the participants from Spanish architecture schools and 40% from other countries.

THIRD

Prior to the present meeting, the following tasks had been undertaken:

– Members of the Judging Panel received in advance a copy of the full documentation of the proposals, consisting of a digital reproduction of the documentation provided by the contestants, so that they have prior knowledge of the entries.

– Members of the Judging Panel assigned zero, one, two or three votes to each of the proposals.

FOURTH

Members of the Judging Panel made a first selection of proposals, moving on to the second phase of deliberating all those proposals that received the support of at least two members of the judging panel or a total of 3 votes, bearing in mind that each member of the judging panel was able to assign 0, 1, 2 or 3 votes per proposal. By means of this procedure, the following 46 proposals were selected:

The judging panel positively evaluated the level of the projects submitted, their quality and their presentation.

FIFTH

Successive eliminations were made to reach the final positions. After a preliminary deliberation the following 28 projects went forward:

PRIZE-WINNERS

The judging panel looked at the projects again, and went on to a detailed criticism and defence of them. From the Judging Panel’s vote the following prize-winners were arrived at:

CODE NAME: 2D22D2

The panel valued the unusual way of tackling complex problems boldly and with an ability for calculated risk taking. Also appreciated was the level of development and resolving of the proposed building types, with a consistent and radical translation of the solution on the ground into housing.

CODE NAME: 39VIVS

The panel valued the way the project is integrated into the fabric of the city, its ability to generate communal spaces out of the variety of shapes and forms relating to both the urban and domestic scale.

CODE NAME: J6A0P1

The landscaping was valued, as were the environmental considerations and the poetic way it retrieves from the coastal setting already existing features that have resonances with the communal memory.
